Next? Another Tech Blog – is simply technical musing and postings by Shane Cooper a 20 year veteran of complex software & hardware deployments, server configurations, customer support & other technology related ideas, concepts, practices & techniques.
> I have a personal blog, but it’s kind of boring unless you know me. So, with the proliferation of technical blogs out there already filling up the Technorati, I figured I’d do my share and add to the noise.
I’ve been involved in some form of technology for well over 20 years. However, rather than coming through the traditional “IT – information technology” route or through software development, I came through the Print and Premedia industry.
Early on in my career, circa 1988 or so, I discovered that technology was driving the “Desktop Publishing“, there’s an old term. Yes, the Desktop Publishing revolution had beginning to take over print, prepress and the graphic arts industry with a vengeance. Apple had released the new Macintosh with it’s “GUI” and Adobe had published PostScript. These two enabling technologies created the environment for mere mortals to be able publish a variety of printed material faster and cheaper. In the olden days, high-end systems like Scitex and other “high-end” systems had cornered the market on fast efficient photo retouching and graphic arts to film. However, they were proprietary and extremely costly.
In my early days, I observed the revolution on the front lines and worked my way through several key positions at a publishing company, then a “Prepress” company that morphed into a “Pre-media” solution provider, then an Advertising Producer and then onto the software development division of said “Pre-media” company. All with the underlying requirement to produce large image files, work flows and eating up HUGE amounts of storage space. Those of us in the early days of graphic design new what a Gigabyte was before it was common.
So… fast forward to today, Circa-2008 or later. After being involved in technology and always looking forward with some form of vision, I’ve finally took the plunge and started this blog looking for the “Next” technical thing, concept, solution, technique, hardware, software, or just blogging about new technology that will have an impact on the technical landscape. If time avails, I might even peek into the graphic arts arena and see what’s happening there.
